Prioritize connection with your teen

As we embark on a new school year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey that lies ahead for our teens. This period is not just about academics; it's about growth, discovery, and the myriad experiences that shape our young ones into responsible and well-rounded adults.

First and foremost, remember that your bond with your teen is supposed to the their safe haven in an exciting and sometimes scary world. It is not replaceable.

Create time and space to listen to their concerns, celebrate their achievements, and provide a shoulder to lean on during challenging times. In days gone by, this was family dinner where everyone attended and the phone was bolted to the wall. Find out what works for your family, and prioritize the time.

Communication is key. Create an environment where open dialogue is encouraged. Teens often face a whirlwind of emotions and pressures, and knowing that they can talk to you about anything without fear of judgment is crucial. This trust-building can make all the difference in helping them navigate the complexities of school life.

Obviously, you remain responsible for setting and enforcing boundaries. You can do that without creating judgment or fear. We talk about how in our UnPerfect Parenting Class (see parenting resources on the front page of our website).

Be aware of the pressures and challenges that today's teens face, including social media influences, peer pressure, academic stress, and social discord. I’m not THAT old, but today’s teen faces a host of headwinds that were science fiction when I graduated High School. Your being accessible and communicative help equip your teen with the tools to handle these pressures.

It's also important to lead by example. Demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning and self-improvement. Show them that education is a lifelong journey, not just a phase confined to school years. Share your own experiences and how continuous learning has benefited you.

Lastly, celebrate the small victories. The new school year will be filled with milestones, both big and small. Recognize and appreciate these moments. Whether it’s a good grade, a new friendship, or a personal breakthrough, each achievement deserves recognition. If your teen is struggling, the more positive reinforcements they need to keep trying.

As we step into this new school year, let’s embrace it with optimism and confidence. Prioritize your connection by creating time to be accessible; by courageous communication; by setting boundaries without judgment; and by leading through example.
