Practical Advice for Reducing Anxiety: Set a Schedule

In private practice, many clients come to me for help managing and reducing their symptoms of anxiety.  Here is one practical tip that I hope you will find helpful as well.

Setting a schedule can be a powerful tool for reducing anxiety by providing structure, predictability, and a sense of control over one's daily life.

Here are four ways in which setting a schedule can help alleviate anxiety:

  1. Provides a sense of structure:

Anxiety often thrives in uncertainty and chaos. By setting a schedule, you create a clear framework for your day, outlining specific times for various activities and tasks. Having a structured routine can create a sense of order and stability, which can help reduce anxiety. Knowing what to expect and having a plan in place can ease the feelings of overwhelm and uncertainty that often increases anxiety.

  1. Enhances time management skills

Anxiety can be triggered by feeling overwhelmed with numerous responsibilities and tasks. By setting a schedule, you can effectively manage your time and prioritize your activities. Breaking down your day into manageable chunks allows you to allocate specific time slots for different tasks, making it easier to stay focused and productive. Improved time management skills can reduce anxiety by providing a sense of accomplishment and reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed.

  1. Reduces decision-making fatigue: Having to constantly make decisions can contribute to anxiety. By establishing a schedule, you eliminate the need to make constant choices about how to spend your time. Instead, you can pre-determine and plan your activities in advance. This reduces decision-making fatigue and frees up mental energy, allowing you to focus on the tasks at hand without feeling overwhelmed by choice.

  2. Promotes self-care and relaxation: Anxiety can often lead to neglecting self-care and relaxation, as the mind becomes consumed by worry and stress. Setting a schedule ensures that you allocate time for activities that promote self-care and relaxation, such as exercise, hobbies, mindfulness, or spending time with loved ones. By consciously incorporating these activities into your schedule, you prioritize your well-being, which can help alleviate anxiety by fostering a sense of balance and self-nurturing.

Remember that while setting a schedule can be helpful, it's also important to remain flexible and adaptable to unexpected changes or challenges that may arise. Finding the right balance between structure and flexibility is key to effectively managing anxiety.
